Finally……an event where I going to have enough time off to pre-fish properly. So I get to Grand Lake the Friday night before the start of the event on Thursday, April 7th. I have Saturday, Sunday, (worked Monday) Tuesday and Wednesday to pre-fish. I decide to start mid-lake and check a few areas I am familiar with. So I go into a few pockets and start about half way back in the pocket thinking water temp hasn’t changed a lot since last Saturday when I fished a BFL. I did not get to pre-fish at all for the BFL and only caught 1 fish. WELL, 4 days of pre-fishing didn’t seem to help all that much. I eliminated a lot of water and managed to bury a trailer hook from my 3/4oz War Eagle spinnerbait in my leg while I was doing it, first day I fished mid-lake and caught two good keepers, second day I fished down lake and caught two keepers, Third day I went to twin bridges and fished the Spring river and only caught 1 keeper, so that afternoon I went to Horse creek and didn’t catch any. The wind blew like 20-30 mph every day and it was hard to move around. The results of the first day were dismal, two keepers for 4#10oz. The second day started out much better, first stop in the flat rock creek area I stick a 6#6oz on a biffle bug. AWSESOME! I already have more weight than the first day! Move to another spot still in flat rock and catch a 6#14oz BEAUTY on a #5 Fat Free shad, citrus shad color. The thing about this fish was when I hooked it I knew it was BIG, but as I started to reel it in I told my co-angler it feels funny, like a drum or a catfish, THEN when I got her to the top it was a monster BASS, only thing was I had her hooked right above her tail by the small treble hook on the back of my Bomber! OH NO, LORD please let me get this fish in the boat! Lucky for me she didn’t put up much of a fight (I think she was just too fat to fight) and came right to the net. Thank God FLW lets us use nets. So, I have these two PIGS in the boat by 9:30 am and I am thinking MONSTER bag today and get me up in check range and salvage my poor day yesterday. I am even thinking 3 more 5#ers and I might make the top ten! 4:00 pm check in time! I have all day to add three more. Fished all day and never caught another keeper. WOW I am bummed! Ended up in 72nd place NO CHECK and thinking I just put myself into a bad spot to make the championship at Table Rock. The end of the story was the best part for me. Saturday night I am having dinner with my son Ben, Dane Coale and Phillip and I get a text from FLW updating the AOY Standings in the SW Costa division, I am thinking, 26th place at Sam Rayburn, 72nd Place at Grand……. I will probably be out of the top 40 in AOY. 28th PLACE!!!! WOW I only fell two places in AOY and am still in a good position to make the championship! I WAS ELATED to say the least. The emotional ups and downs of tournament bass fishing are NUTS! But that’s why we like it!!!! FT. Gibson next but not until September! HANG ON and keep believing!
